Getting Started with RadioDJ and BUTT

Last updated October 15, 2026

RadioDJ handles music playback and scheduling on Windows. Current versions need a separate encoder to send that audio to an Icecast or SHOUTcast server. In this setup, RadioDJ → Voicemeeter → BUTT → VosCast carries the programme to your listeners.

Before you start

Have RadioDJ installed with a working database and some tracks playing. Database installation, library imports and rotation design are separate from the connection described here.

Install Voicemeeter and BUTT. Follow the Voicemeeter installer instructions, including restarting Windows when requested. Then use our Windows audio routing guide to prepare the programme and headphone monitoring paths.

Open Overview → Live broadcasting in your VosCast account. Keep the server type, host, port, Broadcast password, Maximum Bitrate and any Icecast mount available.

RadioDJ's AutoDJ generates a local playlist. It is separate from hosted VosCast Auto DJ. Stop hosted Auto DJ before connecting BUTT, and ensure another live source is not already connected. Your RadioDJ computer must remain running and online for this setup to broadcast.

Route RadioDJ's programme

  1. In RadioDJ's audio output configuration, select Voicemeeter Input for the main programme output. Route other on-air players to that same programme path if you use them.
  2. Keep RadioDJ's cue/monitor output on a separate headphone device or another path that is not sent to the broadcast mix. Previewing the next track must not make it audible to listeners.
  3. In Voicemeeter, enable the virtual output bus for the programme strip: B in standard Voicemeeter, or B1 in Banana/Potato. Use A/A1 as needed for headphone monitoring.
  4. Play a track and check that Voicemeeter's programme strip and virtual output meters respond.

If you use a microphone, select it on a Voicemeeter hardware input and route that strip to the same B/B1 bus. Set speech and music levels before connecting. Keep notifications and the listening player off the broadcast path to avoid interruptions or feedback.

Select the mix in BUTT

Open Settings → Audio in BUTT. Set its primary input to Voicemeeter Out B1; older drivers may call this Voicemeeter Output. This is a recording device, while Voicemeeter Input is the playback device used by RadioDJ.

Use Update devices if the new device is missing. Leave the secondary input unused for this setup, because Voicemeeter already supplies the complete mix. Check that BUTT's meter follows RadioDJ and, if included, your microphone.

Set the streaming codec to MP3, with a bitrate at or below your account's Maximum Bitrate. Choose the intended mono/stereo channel mode and a sample rate supported by your audio devices.

Add your VosCast server

On BUTT's Main settings tab, choose Add in the Server section. Give the profile a recognisable name and use your account's server type.

Icecast

BUTT setting What to enter
Type Icecast
Address Server address / Host, without a scheme, port, or path
Port Your account's Standard port
User source
Password Your Broadcast password, not your account or server admin password
Mountpoint The exact account Mount point, including the leading slash; normally /stream
Use SSL/TLS Off for this standard-port setup

Keep any custom mount unchanged. Do not use the TLS port (SSL) with this profile; the BUTT guide covers TLS as a separate configuration.

SHOUTcast

Choose Shoutcast and enter your account's host, Server port (SHOUTcast) and Broadcast password. Enter the host alone and the base port exactly as shown; do not manually add one. Do not append a username or stream ID to the password.

BUTT uses the SHOUTcast v1 source protocol, including with compatible SHOUTcast 2 servers. An Icecast mount is not used for this profile.

Save and select the server profile. Add your station's Stream Infos on the Main tab. Audio routing does not send track titles automatically; for an initial broadcast you can enter a manual Song Name on BUTT's Stream tab.

Go on air

  1. Start playback in RadioDJ and confirm the Voicemeeter and BUTT meters respond.
  2. Press BUTT's Play button and check that it reports a streaming connection.
  3. Open your account's Quick Listen Link on another device. Check music and speech, allowing for the stream's delay; verify that cue audio is absent.
  4. At the end of the show, press Stop in BUTT to disconnect. Restart hosted VosCast Auto DJ separately if required.

Troubleshooting

  • No BUTT meter: check RadioDJ's programme device, Voicemeeter's B/B1 routing and BUTT's recording input in that order.
  • Preview audio goes on air: move RadioDJ's cue/monitor output off the programme bus.
  • Echo or doubled speech: remove duplicate microphone paths; send the finished Voicemeeter mix into BUTT once.
  • Connection or authentication error: compare the server type, host, port and Broadcast password with your account. For Icecast, also verify source, the exact mount and TLS off.
  • Playback stops after each track: RadioDJ's Assisted mode does this by design; use Automated mode when the playlist should continue.
