VirtualDJ can mix your decks and send the programme to an Internet radio server. This guide uses its built-in SHOUTcast connection for a VosCast SHOUTcast account, and a separate MP3 encoder for a VosCast Icecast account.
Install and check your licence
Download the current Windows or Mac version from the official VirtualDJ website. Sign in with the account holding your licence.
VirtualDJ's manual requires Pro Infinity or Pro Monthly for broadcasting to a third-party radio server. Check the current licence comparison before choosing a licence; the free version's direct-broadcast option is different from sending a stream to VosCast.
Open Overview → Live broadcasting in your VosCast account. Keep the server type, host, port, Broadcast password and Maximum Bitrate available.
Stop hosted VosCast Auto DJ before connecting live, and make sure any other presenter has disconnected. Keep your computer and internet connection running throughout the show. VirtualDJ's local playback does not transfer your music into hosted Auto DJ.
Check the programme audio
Play a track and confirm that VirtualDJ's master mix contains the intended music. Set levels without clipping, and check any microphone before starting the broadcast. Keep headphone cue audio separate from the programme.
If you mix on external hardware, the finished audio must return to the computer for encoding. A microphone connected only to that external mixer will not automatically appear in VirtualDJ's internal mix. Follow the vendor's Record Loopback setup for a hardware-mixer return, or send the mixer/interface input to BUTT instead.
Set up SHOUTcast broadcasting
For a SHOUTcast account, open VirtualDJ's Settings → Broadcast and select Radio Server. This connects to your hosted VosCast server; do not select the computer-to-computer direct-broadcast or podcast option.
| VirtualDJ field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Protocol | ShoutCast, using the v1-compatible connection |
| Encoding Quality | An MP3 bitrate at or below your account's Maximum Bitrate |
| Server URL | Your Server address / Host, without http://, https://, a port, or a path |
| Server Port | The account's Server port (SHOUTcast), exactly as displayed |
| Password | Your Broadcast password, not your VosCast account or server admin password |
| Mount Address | Leave blank for this SHOUTcast profile |
Enter the base port; do not manually add one. A SHOUTcast v1 source also works with a compatible VosCast SHOUTcast 2 server. A source username or stream-ID suffix is not needed for this account setup; do not append either to the password.
Fill in Session Name and Session Genre as appropriate. This walkthrough uses a standard SHOUTcast connection without TLS. Keep your account's Quick Listen Link for listeners; do not distribute a direct-broadcast link from your computer.
Use MP3 with a VosCast Icecast account
For an Icecast account, use BUTT to encode your mix as MP3. Route VirtualDJ's programme output through Voicemeeter on Windows or BlackHole on Mac. If the programme comes from a hardware mixer, choose its audio-interface input in BUTT instead.
In BUTT, add an Icecast server and enter:
- Address: your account's host only, without a scheme, port, or path.
- Port: the account's Standard port, with Use SSL/TLS off.
- User:
source. - Password: your Broadcast password.
- Mountpoint: the exact account Mount point, including the leading slash; normally
/stream. Preserve any existing custom mount.
Select MP3 in BUTT's Audio settings and keep the streaming bitrate at or below Maximum Bitrate. Check that its meter follows the complete programme. Leave VirtualDJ's own radio-server broadcast stopped when using BUTT; connect only the encoder carrying the finished mix.
Go on air and finish the show
- Start programme playback and confirm the outgoing audio levels.
- For the built-in SHOUTcast route, select Start Broadcast in VirtualDJ. For the Icecast route, press Play in BUTT.
- Check that the selected encoder reports a successful connection.
- Open the Quick Listen Link from your VosCast account on a second device. Allow for the stream's delay, then check music, microphone and any song titles. Use headphones to avoid feeding delayed audio back into the show.
- Disconnect the live encoder when finished. Restart hosted VosCast Auto DJ manually if required.
Troubleshooting
- Radio Server unavailable or a licence prompt appears: check the VirtualDJ licence linked to your login.
- Cannot connect: compare the server type, host and port with your VosCast account, and check that hosted Auto DJ or another encoder is stopped.
- Authentication rejected: copy the Broadcast password again. For Icecast through BUTT, also check
source, the mount and the standard-port/TLS combination. - Music works but speech is missing: check whether the microphone is part of the internal mix or only the external mixer, and verify the return/input routing.
- Listeners hear cue audio or an echo: remove the preview or listening-player output from the broadcast path.
